On October 28, 2022, Nikolai Mushegian — a cryptographer who co-founded both MakerDAO and Balancer Labs — posted what would become his final tweet. He wrote that a "pedo elite" trafficking and blackmail ring was operating in Puerto Rico and the Caribbean, involving intelligence agencies.
Approximately four hours after posting the tweet, Mushegian was found dead at Condado Beach in San Juan, Puerto Rico. He was 29 years old. Puerto Rico police ruled his death an accidental drowning.
Mushegian had been living in Puerto Rico, where a significant number of crypto entrepreneurs had relocated for tax advantages. His tweet was not the first time he had expressed concerns about intelligence agency involvement in the crypto space.
The police investigation found no evidence of foul play. However, the extraordinary timing — a specific accusation about a trafficking ring followed by death within hours — has fueled persistent questions. The crypto community has preserved his final tweet and the timeline of events.
