The Intercept documents how the DoD is systematically lowballing wounded and killed-in-action numbers from Iran strikes, repeating the same pattern it was publicly exposed for in a prior cycle.
“The Intercept documents how the DoD is systematically lowballing wounded and killed-in-action numbers from Iran strikes, repeating the same pattern it was publicly exposed for in a prior cycle.”
The Department of Defense undercounted American casualties from Iran strikes. The Intercept reported this in April 2026 — but the disturbing part is the word "again." The DoD had already been publicly called out for the same practice and adjusted nothing.
The Intercept's investigation cross-referenced official DoD release figures with medical evacuation records, congressional notifications, and on-background testimony from service members. The gap between official wounded-in-action counts and actual treated casualties is substantial and consistent across reporting periods.
This is not a data-entry error. Systematic undercounting of combat casualties serves a political function: keeping casualty figures below the threshold that triggers domestic opposition. The DoD applied this tactic in Iraq and Afghanistan. Being caught and continuing the practice in Iran makes it institutional policy, not accident. The families of the undercounted deserve the right to know their service members were erased from the record.
