Multiple WHCD attendees including Kari Lake, Ajit Pai, and former MTV personality Kennedy publicly described the 2026 security as 'shockingly relaxed.' Kennedy: 'Having been to this event several times as early as 1995, this was probably the least security I've encountered.' Only the main ballroom had magnetometers — the lobby and reception areas had none. Cole Allen exploited that exact gap.

Cole Allen wrote in his manifesto that WHCD security was "actually insane" — meaning insanely lax. The internet treated that as a deranged-killer rant. Then attendees started corroborating it.
Kennedy — former MTV personality, present at WHCD events since 1995 — told reporters: "Having been to this event several times as early as 1995, this was probably the least security I've encountered." Former FCC Chair Ajit Pai and former Senate candidate Kari Lake both described the screening as effectively absent. The Gateway Pundit aggregated their direct quotes: "No bag check. No real screening. Just waved through."
The Daily Wire's Megan Basham wrote a first-person account titled "I Never Went Through WHCD Security at the Washington Hilton." Mediaite's writeup: "I Was Inside the Washington Hilton Tonight. The Security Was Downright Awful."
According to AP and US News reporting, only the main ballroom had magnetometers — manned by Secret Service and TSA. Reception areas, lobby, side rooms, and adjacent meeting halls had no screening. Once inside, attendees "roamed freely." Tickets were checked by association volunteers and hotel staff, not federal agents.
Allen's pre-attack written critique — "the security at the event is all outside, focused on protestors and current arrivals, because apparently no one thought about what happens if someone checks in the day before" — matches the layout that attendees independently confirmed after the shooting. Allen's manifesto wasn't paranoid. It was accurate.

Why was 2026 the year? The WHCD has been held since 1920 with progressively tighter post-9/11, post-Boston, post-Butler security postures. The 2026 event was the first time a sitting president attended after eight years of Trump skipping it. The security posture, by every direct attendee account, was the lightest in three decades. Both anomalies stack against the same date.
