UAP (Unidentified Aerial Phenomena)

Official government terminology replacing UFO for unidentified objects in the sky

UAP — Unidentified Aerial Phenomena — is the official terminology adopted by the U.S. government and military to replace the stigmatized term "UFO" (Unidentified Flying Object). The rebranding is itself significant: by adopting clinical language, government agencies could publicly acknowledge the phenomena without triggering the cultural baggage associated with UFOs and "flying saucers."

The shift to UAP terminology accelerated after the revelation of the Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program (AATIP) in 2017. The Pentagon confirmed that the program, which ran from 2007 to 2012 with $22 million in funding, investigated military encounters with unidentified aerial objects. Three declassified Navy videos — "FLIR1," "Gimbal," and "GoFast" — showed objects performing maneuvers that appeared to defy known physics, including instantaneous acceleration, transmedium travel, and movement without visible propulsion.

In June 2021, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence released a preliminary assessment on UAPs, confirming 144 incidents reported by military personnel since 2004. The report could explain only one of the 144 cases. The establishment of the All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO) in 2022 formalized the government's ongoing investigation. The shift from decades of denial and ridicule to official acknowledgment represents one of the most significant Overton window shifts in modern history.
