Whistleblower

Person who exposes wrongdoing within an organization to the public or authorities

A whistleblower is an individual who exposes information about illegal, unethical, or dangerous activities within an organization — typically a government agency, corporation, or military body — to the public, regulatory bodies, or law enforcement. Whistleblowers have been responsible for confirming some of the most significant claims documented on They Knew.

The modern history of whistleblowing includes Daniel Ellsberg, who leaked the Pentagon Papers in 1971, revealing that the U.S. government had systematically lied about the Vietnam War. Mark Felt ("Deep Throat") provided key information about the Watergate cover-up to Washington Post journalists. More recently, Edward Snowden's 2013 disclosures confirmed the existence of NSA mass surveillance programs that the intelligence community had publicly denied for years.

Whistleblower protections in the United States have expanded over time but remain inconsistent. The Whistleblower Protection Act of 1989 covers federal employees who report waste, fraud, or abuse. The Dodd-Frank Act provides financial incentives and protections for securities fraud whistleblowers. The Intelligence Community Whistleblower Protection Act creates channels for reporting within classified programs.

Despite these protections, whistleblowers frequently face severe retaliation. Thomas Drake, an NSA senior executive who reported waste and illegal surveillance through official channels, was charged under the Espionage Act. Chelsea Manning served seven years in military prison for leaking classified documents to WikiLeaks. Reality Winner was sentenced to five years for leaking a single classified document about Russian election interference.

The pattern is consistent: whistleblowers are attacked, prosecuted, or marginalized — until their disclosures are eventually confirmed and absorbed into the mainstream narrative. The person who tells the truth first is rarely thanked for it.
