On September 11, 2001, a third building collapsed in New York City. It was not hit by a plane. Its collapse was not investigated by the 9/11 Commission. And NIST's own computer model could not replicate what the cameras captured.
WTC Building 7 was a 47-story steel-framed skyscraper that collapsed at 5:20 PM on 9/11. No plane struck it. NIST investigated for seven years before concluding that office fires caused the collapse — a first in structural engineering history.
After initially denying freefall occurred, NIST was forced to admit that Building 7 fell at gravitational acceleration for 2.25 seconds. This is physically significant: freefall means zero structural resistance, which is inconsistent with a progressive collapse driven by fire.
In 2020, a four-year computer modeling study at the University of Alaska Fairbanks concluded that fires could not have caused the observed collapse. The study used finite element analysis and found that simultaneous failure of every column was necessary.
